Safety Issue

Consider the following:

1. Reactions to food additives in the areas of learning and behaviour are not presently assessed at all by FSANZ (Food Standards Australia and New Zealand).

2. Reactions to food additives are frequently delayed well beyond the reaction times presently assessed.

3. Reactions to food additives are cumulative and dose related. Current testing does not take this into consideration.

4. Multiple additives, which are now common in foods, act in different ways from those tested singly, yet they are not tested in this way.

FSANZ needs to review the methodology currently used for safety assessment of food additives.

There are safe alternatives that can be substituted without loss of technological function - refer to the Food Intolerance Network factsheet.
